VCP4 holders will get a Workstation 7 license

Jon Hall from the Certification team at VMware has confirmed today that holders of the VCP4 certification will get a new license for VMware Workstation 7. There is a process that has to be finished internally within VMware, then the licenses will be released.

VCP3 holders will still receive a license for VMware Workstation 6, as as always been the case with VCP3.

  1. Interesting. I just passed my VCP3 exam last week, after Workstation 7 was released, and I was hoping to get a license for W7. I'm still waiting on my packet.

  2. will it be a license for the Windows, or the Linux Version, or can I choose between them this time?

  3. @Clay, you'll only get a WS6 license with VCP3.

    @DaHess, not sure.

  4. Workstation 7 Licenses are interchangeable between Linux / Windows.

  5. Thanks, Scott. Oh, well. Already a WS6 user hoping for a free upgrade. Got to pass VCP4, and soon.

@DaHess, if you registered through vue.com/vmware to take your test then there is a setting where you can select Linux or Windows. It can be changed after registering, but before packet gets shipped.

  7. @Clay, Workstation 7 keys are interchangable between the Windows and Linux version.

@Musil, yes you will - all VCP4 holders will get it.

  8. @Clay @Scott Vessey. So I wouldn't have to choose anymore. Rreally? In the past I had to purchase a license for the Linux Version and License for the Windows version.
    Is that hundred percent confirmed?

  9. @David - yes it is, I just found this in an FAQ page on vmware.com:

Can I switch between VMware Workstation 7 for Windows and Linux?
Yes. Starting with VMware Workstation 7, you can switch between Windows and Linux version of VMware Workstation using the same license key. If you decide to switch host operating systems, you must uninstall Workstation from the host operating system you no longer plan to use. If you plan to run VMware Workstation 7 on both a Linux and Windows host, you need to purchase two licenses.

  11. Hi, just passed VCP-410. 2 Questions.

What exactly triggers the sending of the free license ? Just passing the VUE VCP exam ?

I do not find anymore the link (in VUE?), where I entered whether I want a free WS license for Linux or Windows ...

    Thanks for any pointer !

    BR Andreas

  12. Hi Andreas, VMware send out the licence key automatically when you gain the VCP certification, either by email or in the welcome kit. The licence key applies to both the Windows and Linux version of Workstation. Scott.
