July 28th updates to exam blueprints

A number of VMware certification exam blueprints have been updated to new versions.

vSphere
VCP4 v1.9.2: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-10074
VCP5 beta v1.4: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-16726

View
VCA4-DT v1.2: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-16714
VCP4-DT v1.1: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-16715

It looks like the changes in all the blueprints are minor, but as always it is advisable to use the latest blueprint available to help prepare you for the certification exams.

What's a BrownBag? Find out this week!

There are only a couple of things in life that I would buy and expect the contents to be given to me wrapped in a brown paper bag, and lunch isn't one of them! However, over in the US the term Brown Bag (or "brown bag seminar" according to Wikipedia) is designed to be an hour-long seminar that can be consumed by attendees whilst they also consume their lunch!

Well-known blogger Cody Bunch started his VCP BrownBag series over a year ago, extended the coverage to incorporate VCDX, and now has an impressive list of guests and topics similar to the VMware Communities Podcast! The problem for us Europeans is that we have to stay up very late if we want to join Cody's BrownBags live, so Tom Howarth of PlanetVM fame has agreed to start a BrownBag series that will run during evening hours in the UK and Europe.

So, the first European BrownBag takes place this Thursday, July 7th, and it starts at 7pm UK time. Tom has kindly asked me to be a guest speaker/presenter on the session, and we plan on discussing the current state of play with VMware certifications and curriculum.

VCA4-DT Exam Registration is now open

A few days earlier than I previously expected, VMware and Pearson Vue have now opened registration for the final VCA4-DT exam. You can register here: http://www.pearsonvue.com/vmware/schedule

The cost varies from country to country, in the UK the cost is £95+VAT.

Here's a link to all the other VCA4-DT posts on my blog so far, including the link to the exam blueprint: http://vmwaretraining.blogspot.com/search/label/vca-dt

VCP4-DT beta exam invitations

VMware have sent out invitiations for the VCP4-DT beta exam, check your Inbox to see if you have one!

The VCP4-DT certification will only be awarded to those who also hold VCP4 certification, and of course you must either pass this new beta exam or the final exam as and when it is released.

The foundation-level VCA4-DT exam went through it's beta process in February and will get it's final release via PearsonVUE soon. Later this year VMware will also release the exam for VCAP4-DT.

My earlier blog post on these new desktop certifications for vSphere and View is here:

And before anybody asks, I can't get you an invitation to the beta exam - your best option would be to email certification@vmware.com

New Desktop Certifications

I knew this line of certifications was going to be launched in this quarter, but they've now been officially announced, VMware have launched a new range of certifications centred around vSphere 4.x and View 4.5:

VMware Certified Associate: Desktop (VCA4-DT)
VMware Certified Professional: Desktop (VCP4-DT)
VMware Certified Advanced Professional: Desktop (VCAP4-DT)

The current state of play is that registration is open for the beta VCA4-DT exam, and the beta exam blueprint has also been published. A mock exam will also be made available.

VCA4-DT has no compulsory training or certification pre-requisites, although VMware recommend completion of the following to help with preparation for the exam:

VMware View 4.5: Fundamentals - a 4-hour self-paced e-learning course
VMware View 4.5: Install Configure Manage - a 4-day instructor-led course

VCP4-DT and VCAP4-DT will both have certification pre-requisites, for example the VCP4-DT exam will only be available for those already holding the VCP4 certification.

Here are the sections in the current version of the VCA4-DT exam blueprint:

- Monitor VMware View Environment
- Maintain pools and desktop resources
- Manage ThinApp entitlements
- Support and Troubleshooting
- End User Support
- Component features and functions

It remains to be seen if VMware will announce further specialist certifications...

UPDATE: February 11th
A quote from Yves Sandfort who took the VCA4-DT beta exam: "I even tried the Beta Exam today, a few surprises but I think should be achievable by anybody attending View ICM and ThinApp courses... Wouldn't suggest to try without..."
