Update on new vSphere Certifications

I have a few snippets of news on some of the new certifications coming from VMware for vSphere 4, I am only allowed to say a limited amount at the moment, VMware will be making an official announcement in the coming weeks ahead of the release of these new certifications and their component exams.

On top of the existing foundation level VCP4 certification, there will be three new certifications for vSphere 4:

  • Enterprise Administrator Certification *
  • Design Administrator Certification *
  • VMware Certified Design Expert on vSphere 4 (VCDX4)

* Final name still to be confirmed

I know when VMware plan to announce these certifications officially, and I also know when the relevant exams are due to be released, but due to confidentiality I can't say any more than the above at the moment...
I shall certainly be signing up to take at least one of the above certifications when they become available!

  1. Would the Design Administrator be a pre-req, cut down, or stepping stone to VCDX4? Certainly sounds interesting.

Any details on the upgrade path from VCDX 3?

  3. @Anonymous, that's one thing I'm not allowed to confirm or deny, you will have to draw your own conclusions based on what I've said in the body of this article.

@Dave, Jon Hall from VMware stated a while ago that VCDX3 holders would be able to achieve VCDX4 by passing the new Design exam on vSphere, I don't know if that's still true as I doubt that will get confirmed until the VCDX4 is fully launched. I mentioned that in a previous VCDX4 posting here.

  6. Hi Scott, do you know if we'll be able to book the exams in the same way as the current VCP or have to 'apply' as with the current Enterprise exam?

  7. I don't know what the booking procedure will be for the new exams, it's too early to say...

  8. Interesting for sure. I'm waiting for the vSphere based exams, and am also intrigued as Cisco have told UCS Design candidates that we'll be able to take the vSphere Design exam without doing the rest of the VCDX program...

  9. Hi Simon, I am aware of the Cisco requirement around the vSphere Design exam, a lot of my customers are Cisco partners - I know Cisco are saying that, nothing official from VMware yet although we will definitely have the "Design Administrator Certification"... :-)

  10. Hi Scott,
Any idea when these exams are going to be announced?
I know you are in the same position as myself in that you have dont the VCDX ent exam in vi3. What is the upgrade path going to be? i.e. will we have to do an ent exam upgrade before we can do the vsphere design exam?

I was hoping to get the design exam done ASAP so i could hopefuly do my defecne in octobers vmworld eurpoe.

  11. Hi David,

I do know but I can't say. Sorry! The only VCDX3 to VCDX4 step I know of is for someone who's already a full VCDX3, and that will involve them just doing the new vSphere Design exam when it becomes available.

You could either wait for the vSphere exams, or go ahead with the VI3 versions and "upgrade" from VCDX3 to VCDX4 as and when...

  12. Scott - go poke Jon Hall and make him at least give us an official announcement date! I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas - hmm, that says a lot about my mental state.

  13. Go poke Jon Hall and make him at least let you tell us the official announcement date! I'm like a kid anticipating Christmas... which I know probably says quite a bit about my mental state.

  14. Hi Anonymous,

There will be an official announcement mid-May around the new certifications. The exam blueprint documents will follow that, then the exams themselves... that's all I'm currently allowed to say.

    Scott.

  16. Hello Scott,

I just finish with the VMware training (Configure, Manage and troubleshoot) I plan to take the exam the next few weeks...Is there any link or web site I can use during these next few weeks?

PS: Sorry for my English...I'm from a Francophone country in West Africa.

  19. Good day Scott,

I'm back again with one more question...So, do you know if, in VCP4 exam there will be simulations like Cisco do? Thanks again for your time, I appreciate.

  20. Hi s.s,

The exams in the new vSphere certifications will include labs and simulations, my understanding is that the VCP4 exam will not change for the forseeable future.

    Scott.
